I dont agree with that at all. When you stick is too long its pretty much impossible to catch passes behind you(while skating) smoothly. With a short stick its easy because you can lay the blade on the ice pretty much anywhere around you. I use my skates very frequently for catching passes and even doing that its easier to deflect it up to a shorter stick.
