Official Hollywood Top 34 #6

THE OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD TOP 34 ~ 2010-11

Finally, the teams have played enough games so that I can sort the teams in a report-card like fashion into A, B, C, and D categories in week #6 of THE OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD TOP 34. If you want to check things out to verify data, here are the links:This development means that I need not sort the teams first by conference and then try to blend the conference results.

For some special notes, I have to start with the AUS, and more specifically with St. F-X. They were formerly ranked #1 back when they were 4-0. They have now lost 4 straight, against 4 different teams. Perhaps charitably, I have left them as a B+ team for now. Conversely, UPEI jumps. They pounded St FX and this week's conquest of SMU, paired with their win over UNB, scores them a lot of points. For their part, SMU have played only 6 games (one against every AUS team but for STU). Their rating as an A level team may also be charitable. But they are defending national champions and were somewhat wobbly in last year's rankings most of the way. As for STU, it is hard to know where to rank the 'Pids. The AUS is a tough conference. But it is not just their record, it is their margin of defeat that makes me put them at D level.

In the CW, Alberta clearly warrant an A level ranking. Manitoba's convincing wins over Regina, though playing down 3 men, accentuate their strength. For now I am hesitant to bring anybody else into the A level. If Manitoba can sweep the mid-ranked CW teams while doing well against the upper level teams then a move could happen. The same could be said for Calgary. However, many have questioned their pedigree due to the closeness of some early results. Sask presents as a conundrum. Are they are contender with some early season struggles? Or are they a mid-ranked team destined to split a whole lot of series?

Turning to the OUA East, many in the official rankings are going ga-ga over McGill. I am not. Yes they are 10-0. However, the OUA East has been the weakest division in the CIS. And McGill has yet to play the 2nd and 3rd placed teams (Concordia and Carleton). Still, their margins of victory have been impressive. A weekend in the west followed by a weekend on the Atlantic seaboard would tell us where they really rank. Their ability to kick sand in the faces of 98-pound weaklings has been established. I need to see them beat some big boys. UQTR shocks me. Their 6-4 record covers up a really poor start. Two one-sided losses to McGill, and two losses to a 2nd year program from Nipissing, makes this more than a poor start.

Finally, the OUA West has severed into two packs: The Urban Cowboys by themselves in one whilst the other 8 are in a pack within spitting distance of .500. UWO has only lost once, and that was in OT. Based on strength of schedule, I have given them the edge over McGill. The division's other recent contenders (Lakehead, Laurier, and Waterloo) have all come back to the pack. The slipping of Lakehead shocks me. I would have bet that they would remain strong forever. Yet all they have done is split every weekend series. (They are the only side in the OUA which plays CW-style weekend double-headers.) The fact that Brock is 3-3-3 against these teams, and looked positively woeful by CW standards when they played Manitoba, forces me to conclude that none of the teams in this division, outside of UWO, are really close to being B level teams. So I have them at C+ or C level for now.
