PHILADELPHIA – The afterglow of Friday’s 2-1 victory over the Wild dimmed dramatically when it was learned that forward Steve Bernier would undergo surgery Saturday to repair an orbital bone fracture sustained in a post-game fight with defenseman Brent Burns.

There’s no timetable for Bernier’s return, but certainly 2-4 weeks would be an optimistic prognosis.

Burns, who was assessed a five-minute major and game misconduct, was suspended by the NHL for two games, Wild General Manager Chuck Fletcher told ESPN.

Burns fired the last shot of the game and was pushed by Bernier. Burns then punched Bernier, and the butt-end of his stick caught the former Canuck above his right cheekbone. Bernier dropped to the ice in a pool of blood.

“Whether there was intent there or not, that’s for other people to decide,’’ Panthers coach Pete DeBoer said. He’s pretty hurt in there.”
