One thing that hasn't been mentioned here -- arguing with an official is 100% pointless, regardless of who is right or wrong.
No referee likes being yelled at, and if they overturn a call because you argued with them, they'll be getting it all game. Plus, what do you really expect? for them to award you a penalty shot becuase of their screwup? The best you could concievably get is an appology. The right thing would've been to approach the ref, asked him if that's why he blew it down, and then
explain something to the tune of "You guys have a tough job, I don't expect you to overturn it, but for future reference a player can skate backwards into the zone as long as he has possession of the puck".
