Though I don't think we have to worry about the bonus cushion. RB can correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume that Prospal's bonus is based on games played, and therefore he is unlikely to receive his bonus.
There was little doubt of the mutual attraction between the Rangers and Prospal, only the ability of the parties to reach a contract agreement. As an over-35, Prospal qualified for bonuses that can be deferred onto the 2011-12 cap, if necessary.

The bonus package is believed similar to the games-played clause Brendan Shanahan received from the Blueshirts in 2007-08.

The signing indicates that the Blueshirts are convinced that Prospal's relatively disappointing second half was a result of the knee injury he sustained in December (and from which he probably returned too soon) and not a function of his age.

Shanahan, the 38-year-old winger who called the Rangers last summer to say he wanted to play in New York, patiently kept in touch the last couple of weeks while the team loaded up on the free-agent market. He then agreed yesterday to a one-year deal that will pay him a base salary of $2.5 million.

That is well below what he made last season - and what he could have made had he responded to any of the recruiting calls from rival clubs he received over the last 10 days. But easily attainable (and cap-deferrable under the CBA) bonuses should result in Shanahan making $5.3million this season.

A $2 million bonus will kick in if he plays more than 10 games and he will make another $800,000 in playoff incentives.

Prospal's bonus is worth $1.4 million. If he comes back in late December and remains healthy,he'll get the bonus. 10 or so games for $1.4 million. IF it's similar to Shanny's bonus.

Chatted with Vinny Prospal as he rode stationary bike; he said he has "no idea" when he will begin skating yet "they haven't told me"!/JimCerny/status/7197702936858625

But Prospal did say he is progressing after weeks of rehab in pool!/JimCerny/status/7197900396306432

@jenconnic Drury is still a ways off from returning, I believe, because he still can't hold his stick; skating, but nothing else right now!/JimCerny/status/7201135777546240
