I've played goal and played both with and without the plastic dangler.
Personally, I stopped using the dangler. The "goatee/chin" of today's goalie masks stretch down pretty far. It's almost impossible to have a Trent Mcleary type hit to the throat as it extends pretty long.
Also, the dangler is one more piece of equipment to deal with, especially when looking straight down. With the amount of water that gets sprayed on if from drinking between whistles, it can get pretty dirty/foggy.
