There's a fundamental difference between outlier arguments and "guy is producing just fine" arguments.

Small sample size isn't reliable to prove a point, regardless of what the point or context of the argument it's being used in happens to be. Granted, Carter's production this year matches up with what he's been doing the last few, but once you cite those seasons you're not really relying on a small sample size anymore.

What's more, while the sample size we have for Zherdev this year is small, it isn't really that comparable to the rest of his career really. This is a very very different situation than he's been in before. So we don't really know if his performance this season (at least statistically) is as anomalous as it might seem, or if that is close to how he would produce on this team over a longer period of time.
