Thought I'd play with some numbers. here are the salaries that would have been paid in the 04/05 season.

Esche Robert $775,000.00
Fedoruk Todd $575,000.00
Gagne Simon $2,600,000.00
Handzus Michal $2,800,000.00
Johnsson Kim $2,800,000.00
Kapanen Sami $2,500,000.00
Knuble Michael $2,000,000.00
Markov Daniil $2,900,000.00
Primeau Keith $4,500,000.00
Roenick Jeremy $7,000,000.00
Somik Radovan $675,000.00
Stevenson Turner $1,600,000.00
Timander Mattias $800,000.00

Bumping up Esche to 2 mil and applying a 24% roll back to the rest puts this group at $21,370,000. Not included are Pitkanen, Sharp, Fedoruk, Radivojevic, Seidenberg, Carter, Richards, Nittymaki. Pitkanen is probably the most expensive. I believe he had a three year deal worth about 3 mil (2.28 mil after the roll back). Carter and Richards will likely get the rookie max (between 1.2 and 1.7 so split the difference and call it 1.5). If the rest average 750 K apiece (x5) that brings the grand total to $30,040,000. This is good enough to fit under even the most dire hard cap proposed by the league. if the cap is realisitically around 40 mil or so, we have 10 million dollars to spend.

In the upcoming free agent market that is HUGE. We can realistically expect to land at least two big names with that much room.

bought out (assuming it doesnt count towards the cap)
Brashear Donald $2,200,000.00
Amonte Anthony $5,880,791.00
LeClair John $9,000,000.00

edit: looks like I included Fedoruk twice so knock off an additional 750K from the total.
