Smyth is alright and I am fine with waiting out the rest of his contract. He is still on pace for 26 goals and 47 points, that is still good enough for second line minutes. He has never really had much hockey sense, and has always been a big, hard-nosed, old school hockey player. I agree he has lost a step and is starting to look a step behind those around him, but he is still decent with the puck, even if his board work looks sloppy, he still maintains possession most of the time, and he is a good guy to have around the net.
The saddest thing to me is that he gets into the right spots and he knows what to do, he just has trouble executing due to physical limitations. Last night when he got that stretch pass on the powerplay, five-ten years ago he would've turned in, taken that puck to the net, and at least gotten a scoring chance, but this time three guys caught him before he could go five feet.
