I really prefer lighter smaller shoulder pads. Big bulky pads are an encumbrance and I find them just uncomfortable. In the entire time I've played pick-up, rec league Hockey I can count the number of times I have been hit in the chest with a puck on 1 hand. Don't get me wrong taking a shot in the chest is no pleasant experience but for the most part it's really rare especially at lower levels and huge overprotective pads are not really necessary.

The X:20 skates will be good for you to begin with, but you know better skates will make a difference.
