Sticking to low-level gear at the start is a smart choice, as long as everything fits well and you can move freely in the gear.

If you stick with hockey for a while, you will eventually end up replacing most of your gear anyways because you will in time develop preferences for fit, etc., and learn things with experience that you don't know at the start.

Good luck and congrats on your start in the sport and your first step towards gear whorism.
