An extension is only for more years, the money in the later years is negotiated. Just because a player signs a contract for $20m over 4 years doesn't mean he's receiving $5m per year for each year of the contract. He might get $6m the first 2 years and $4m the last 2 years.
Hypothetically, if Brodeur has $10mil left on his contract over 2 years and he signs an extension that brings his contract to 5 years, $20mil... that would mean he gets $5mil for each of the the first two seasons and $3.3mil over the next 3. Anything else is called a renegotiation of an existing contract, not an extension. So, unless Brodeur agrees to spread the total of his new contract over the 4 years, I don't see how the Devils would claim $1.2m more of salary room under Brooks' scenario.
