I don't think we can go from no cap to a hard cap. There will probably be some sort of soft cap and/or luxury tax arrangement that allows the top end guys to earn the big bucks. Some of the bigger market teams do have justification for giving big dough to the marquee players (i.e. NYR with their cable tv business - though I'm definitely not saying that their current payroll is justified...).
I think Bertuzzi is worth the five 1st rounders as a RFA signing. For instance, Det might be one of teams to sign him, since Yzerman and Hull may be gone after this year and their forwards are getting a bit smallish. If Forsberg goes home and/or Kariya + Selanne don't return, the Avs will also have room.
5 first round picks sounds good, but I dont believe in Canucks scouting staff... just look at our last 5 first rounders...
Dont think we can draft anyone even close to Berts calibre of player.. however, we can trade them for other good players.
