2012's free agent pool is not all enticing (especially outside of d-men. the best forwards are penner and hemsky

). the right move is to act sooner rather than later, without making dumb moves. richards is an elite talent. if he's available you do what you have to make that happen.
and it's never a good idea to overpay any UFA, regardless. and paying a lot for one player doesn't necessarily mean overpaying. drury/gomez at 7+ = overpaid. richards/gaborik at 7+ = proper value
