So, it was OK to go with a prized prospect (probably the only one in the whole organization) and leave him out to dry for that stretch of games? And it was OK to start the season with only one goalie--who had a history of serious injuries by that point--in the whole organization with any solid NHL experience?

And let's not forget that Sather's mandate was to get the team back into the playoffs--that's what the expectation was in those days--that's why he had traded for players like Lindros and Bure. Sather came here claiming that with the money the Rangers had, he could buy a team that could contend (and signed players that summer like Holik--certainly someone who a team signs with expectations of making the playoffs). Richter played only 13 games that season before he was hurt--they hadn't fallen out of the playoff race at that point.
