Well yeah it's one of Canada's national sports.

Having said that, the problem isn't hockey existing. It's hockey having a fan base big enough to be in the same universe as other sports.

Yeah hockey is big in Canda but even in those European countries, hockey is at best the number two sport behind Soccor and in many a few slots lower.

Hockey problem is that it will always have a strong fan base....amongst people who care about hockey, Once you go outside of the element, just about anywhere but Canada, you become hard pressed to find an "average" person who really cares or will be a customer.
