I agree with almost everything you said,
But I still think your selling Edler short...He is much better defensively than those other puck moving defensemen...He is a PMD in the Drew Doughty ( I do not wish to say he is as good as Doughty or has his ceiling... ) sense, He can give and take physicality in his own zone, something those other Dmen simply cannot. Still, if the Devils don't want to give up any assets to get a PMD your point is well taken...they have options. Kabby would be a good fit.
