It's more of the fact that we are seeing veterans who are becoming a hindrance or just not performing up to their salaries (i.e. Handzus and Ponikarovsky), while the younger players are actually showing some promise, speed and creativity. Ponikarovsky was signed to replace Frolov, and he's been a lot worse than Fro was last season. Handzus is supposed to be a defensive specialist that can chip in with some offense, but he is starting to look out of place, having been demoted to the fourth line for a brief period of time.

While a player like Lewis, Clifford or Westgarth are learning to play at this level, Loktionov and Moller did not look out of place at this level. Martinez out played two older players in Harrold and Drewiske and rightfully has earned a spot in the top six D rotation.

My problem is how this team tries to force skill players to play a different style that skill players are not accustomed to. I think we are seeing that with some of the more experienced players too, in particular with Kopitar and Brown. They're better players defensively, but look what has become of their offensive production. It's the same crap that happened in Columbus with Ken Hitchcock expecting every player to play a clutch and grab style of hockey.

Remember what the focus was going to be on supposedly when training camp began in September? Terry Murray wanted to implement a puck possession game. Looking at this roster with its lack of speed and puck handling ability, how many players on the roster are capable of playing a puck possession game? Loktionov displayed those skills, and after one bad game, he was quickly demoted.
