people keep ignoring the fact that perhaps DL is looking at this from a different viewpoint. LA has and still needs a #2 C long term. Schenn is going to be that player for quite some time, why should DL trade him for someone that is A) a short term situation (whether it's a contract or age), or B) has a substantial injury history.
why should Dean give up on a guy he feels so strongly about (and ironically it seems everyone else whether fans or GM's) that will possibly be in LA for the next 5-10 years? why fill one need/hole in the line-up, by creating another one? he has the C position taken care of now. if he trades Schenn then we are talking Kopi, Stoll, Lokti, Lewis down the middle. keeping Schenn gives LA the immediate depth and talent down the middle.
it makes NO sense to trade Schenn for anyone imo. by keeping him and what else LA has, DL then doesn't have to address the C position for years except for the occasionally later pick. he can focus the top picks on adding quality wingers. trade Schenn and now he has to once again look for a C and in a few years start looking for a LW again.
