I'm trying to gauge where people view Sergei Gonchar defensively. Here are some noted offensive defensemen, and where I think they are in relation to Gonchar:

Flash Hollett-about the same, maybe slightly better, but not much.
Phil Housley-not sure about this one,
Brian Rafalski-not as good as Gonchar defensively, but not by a large margin.
Lennart Svedberg-not as good as Gonchar defensively.
Lloyd Cook-really not sure about this one.
Carol Vadnais-I'm thinking about equal, maybe a little worse.
Dan Boyle-this is an interesting comparison. Both are strikingly similar, being labeled as one-dimensional early in their careers, and as they developed became better in their own end. Unfortunately, the stigma of being weak in their own zone has sort of stuck with both of these guys. I'm thinking about equal.
Reijo Ruotsalainen-not as good as Gonchar.
Dennis Kearns-not as good as Gonchar.
