What are the chances that the money we have left to spend is all going to be spent on a forward? We supposedly had 6 mil to spend on free agents before we failed to qualify Eaton. Eaton opens up around 750k in space. Subtracting Hamrlik at 2.5 (because I think that's as high as we would be able to go) and Markov at 2.3, we would be left with approximately 2 mil to spend on another forward. Considering there isn't much in the way of forward talent left on the UFA market, a trade is probably more likely. Names like Gagne, Handzus, and Zetterberg have been thrown around on the trade rumor board and places like Leaf's lunch. With a chance to land one of these names, we could budge off the self imposed 26 million cap and accomodate them. Handzus, for example, would put us right at our self imposed cap with Markov and Hamrlik (at the previous 2.5 mil) signed.
Passing up Hamrlik is not a guarantee that we will spend that money on a forward. As much as we need one, Poile isn't going to spend it just to satisfy a need. If no one left is worth it (and I'm not sure they are), then I don't see why the 4.5 mil or so we have left to spend can't be spent between two players-A dman and a forward.
