1970-1974:
  • October 22, 1970 -- In the first meeting, the Flyers scored three times in the third period en route to a 4-2 win in Philadelphia. Bobby Clarke and Jean-Guy Gendron, selected as the game's top two stars, netted important goals to give Philly a 3-2 lead. The Sabres led 2-0 in the opening period on goals 24 seconds apart by Cliff Schmautz, who would be claimed on waivers by the Flyers later in the calendar year, and Gilbert Perreault. Goalies: Dave Dryden (34 saves) vs. Bernie Parent (18 saves, one assist).
  • November 8, 1970 -- Philly won 3-1 in front of 7,849 in the Flyers' first visit to the Aud. The Flyers were held scoreless until 1:31 remained in the second period. Wayne Hillman's (1-1-2) 20-foot screen shot was the decisive goal, 28 seconds into the third period. Bobby Clarke assisted on both third period goals. Roger Crozier made 33 saves in defeat.
  • January 24, 1971 -- Don Marshall (2-1-3), Doug Barrie (0-3-3) and Joe Daley (24 saves) led Buffalo to a 6-4 home win.
  • February 14, 1971 -- Roger Crozier (27 saves) and Paul Andrea (1-2-3) led the Sabres to a 3-2 home win. Rick MacLeish scored his first NHL goal.
  • February 25, 1971 -- Doug Favell made 27 saves in the Flyers' 3-2 win in Philadelphia. Cliff Schmautz and Andre Lacroix gave Philly a 2-0 advantage after one period. Both Buffalo goals came on PPs.
  • April 4, 1971 -- Andre Lacroix scored twice in the last 4:18 lifting Philly to a 3-3 home tie in the season finale. The Flyers held a 9-2 shots advantage after one period but trailed 1-0. Buffalo led 2-0 until Rick MacLeish scored his second NHL goal with 1:10 left in the second period. The Sabres took a 3-1 lead with 5:50 remaining. Joe Daley made 32 saves for the Sabres.
  • November 5, 1971 -- Gilbert Perreault scored twice and Roger Crozier made 27 saves in the Sabres' 5-2 home win. The Sabres scored three times in 78 seconds in the third period.
  • December 16, 1971 -- Doug Favell, pulled the prior night against the Rangers, made 35 saves in a 5-0 home victory. Serge Bernier (2-1-3), scoreless in his previous 15 games, scored twice and Bill Clement (1-1-2) added two points. The Flyers scored two PPGs in 33 seconds to take a 3-0 lead.
  • February 13, 1972 -- Bobby Clarke (1-2-3) scored with less than nine minutes remaining and Philadelphia tied 4-4 in Buffalo. After Jimmy Lorentz evened the game 3-3 with 55 seconds to play in the middle period, Flyers' goalie Doug Favell received a game misconduct and was ejected; this left Philly with injured backup Don "Smokey" McLeod as the goalie for the rest of the game. McLeod, who was in his second game with the Flyers, had a knee injury suffered the night before when he made his Flyers' debut in Minnesota against Gump Worsley. It appeared that forward Gary Dornhoefer (who had two assists) would wear goalie gear as an emergency replacement. McLeod, however, did play and stopped eight of nine shots. Rick Martin of the Sabres scored his 38th goal which tied Gilbert Perreault's NHL rookie record set the prior season. A few days earlier, goalie Bruce Gamble suffered a career-ending heart attack in a game at Vancouver and he was replaced for the following night's game in Oakland by Russ Gillow (emergency signing) who did not see action.
  • March 16, 1972 -- Bill Flett scored twice for the Flyers in a 3-3 tie at Philadelphia. Rick MacLeish scored his first goal of the season. MacLeish played 43 NHL games in his first two NHL seasons and scored three times -- all in separate games against Buffalo.
  • March 30, 1972 -- Doug Favell made 28 saves in the Flyers' 3-1 home win. Rick Foley tied the game early in the third period. Joe Watson scored the GWG with 6:40 to play. Bob Kelly, who assisted on Watson's goal, finished the scoring. Jim Lorentz gave the Sabres a 1-0 lead in the first period and that was the lone goal during the first 46+ minutes. Dave Dryden made 38 saves in the loss.
  • April 2, 1972 -- Gerry Meehan's blast just inside the blue line with four seconds to play, on the last day of the regular season, eliminated the Flyers from the 1972 playoff picture. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKanX...eature=related. The Flyers led 2-0 and needed a win or tie to advance. Roger Crozier made 36 saves in Buffalo's 3-2 home win.
  • November 4, 1972 -- In just his third NHL game, Bill Barber (1-3-4) had four points and scored the first of his 420 career regular season goals in a 5-3 home win. Twelve seconds into the game, Don Saleski and Rick Martin fought and then later in the period Tim Horton was handed a game misconduct as third man in during an altercation between Bob Kelly and Larry Carriere.
  • November 11, 1972 -- Doug Favell made 31 saves and Rick MacLeish scored twice in the Flyers' 3-1 home win. MacLeish (2-1-3), Bill Barber (1-1-2) and Gary Dornhoefer (0-3-3) scored eight of the Flyers nine points. Barry Ashbee was tossed from the game (22 PIMs).
  • January 7, 1973 -- Dave Dryden made 35 saves in the Sabres' 2-0 home win. Doug Favell made 37 saves in the loss.
  • January 21, 1973 -- Bill Flett had a hat trick and Bobby Taylor made 42 saves in the Flyers' 4-3 win in Buffalo. Philly led 3-0 after two periods with Flett accounting for each goal. Bobby Clarke had three assists. Buffalo outshot Philly 45-34.
  • March 28, 1973 -- Gilbert Perreault (2-1-3) and Don Luce each scored twice and Roger Crozier made 26 saves in Buffalo's 6-3 home win. The game was scoreless after the first period but the Sabres led 3-0 at the 4:05 mark of the second period and out-scored Philly 4-2 in the middle session. Dave Schultz and Don Saleski of the Flyers and Jim Lorentz and Tracy Pratt of the Sabres were tossed 1:07 into the game in a brawl that had 84 of the 130 PIMs whistled.
