The problem with the Panthers is that its a playoff wasteland. We're talking about high level athletes here, most of them want a realistic chance to win or at least be part of a competitive team.
The Lightning have the potential to be great tho. Watch them get whoever they want as long as the owners put money now that Yzerman, Stamkos and Boucher brought that team back to respectability.
Still, 500 000 is far more than anyone working an average job can expect to make. An average salary here in crappy jobville Vancouver is 32 500. In one year a player like Pyatt can make as much as 15 years worth of salary for an average worker. Unless they make stupid investments, and live in Vancouver where a 500 000 salary will buy you a crack shack
, most players are relatively well off.
For many of these borderline players, a living can easily be made in Europe or in coaching/hockey schools/etc.
