Maybe, maybe not, we'll never know. Kopitar has never been a problem for the Kings. What the Kings were going through at that time, I don't think it really mattered. He was brought in basically at the start of he semi rebuild. By that I mean, Dean signed all those free agents to bye some time and to gather draft picks.
Kopitar has developed into one of the top 2 way centers in the league. Would that of sped up that development with a year spent in the AHL? In my opinion, it's a toss up. He quickly learnt the offensive NHL game, and then quickly learnt the NHL defensive game by playing in the NHL. I think Kopitar had nothing to prove in the AHL with playing a season in the SEL.
