Your line of thinking seems to be- Crosby's fine but the Pens are giving him more time than he needs. That's not the case, as Crosby hasn't taken contact and isn't really all that close to seeming that far.

Plus, it would be foolish to have a 100% healthy and healed up player that you're not going to use until the team's back is against the wall. If that was the case, it'd be better to just shut him down if you're worried about playing him this year.

Crosby will, and should play when he is 100%. Whether the Pens are up 3-1 in a series or down 1-3...Or, sadly, opening night next year.
