Like others have said our PP did not help McCabe at all because the passing was so deliberate that teams just focused on him to prevent him from taking the shot, and then to counter this Torts had Gaborik and him on the point together, expecting Gaborik to be left uncovered to take shots because the defenders were so tight on McCabe. Problem was Gaborik was still afraid to shoot as well, this should have been Girardi, Staal, Christensen, or heck even Dubinsky blasting away when McCabe was unable to shoot.
Regardless there were so many different options the Rangers could have done, instead of having Staal push forward into the slot and have a forward (EC or Gabby) drop back, they could have had McCabe do this which would have been a huge wrinkle for opposing defenders as you don't want McCabe to get set up in the slot with his bomb. However Torts or Sullivan never tried anything different.
Sure I agree with the notion that the system and the lack of movement/passing didn't help McCabe, but McCabe also didn't help himself refusing to shoot and knowing teams were keying in on him he has been around long enough to go to the coaching staff and say, hey they are covering me tight knowing I am the shooter, lets try something different or create some different looks to allow someone else to get the shot since I don't have one.
