This will in turn free up cap space, so that Sather can give out more contracts. All makes perfect sense.

... not sure what you expect a rich team to DO with cap space. We all talk about the need for it, but it's only useful if you actually take advantage of it when you have it. It's like the people who want to trade real NHLers for draft picks CONSTANTLY. Draft picks are nice, just like cap space is nice, but having actual players on the roster is better.
We can talk about the poor decisions he's made on who to give the Cap space to, but I don't see where the criticism really lies for him using the space he has. As far as post-lockout is concerned, the only player I remember him signing that was redundant (as in, did not attempt fill a need that the team had) was the Redden one. Whether the players he was signing actually did fill those needs is a different story.
