By the time the Avs had won the Cup the payroll had "swelled" to 16 million so yeah according to everything I've read if Roy was making 4 the rest of the team was making 12 million. Sakic's offersheet was ridiculously high for the time, a front loaded 21 million dollar deal. Had the Pepsi Center deal not gone thru he likely would have been lost to the Avs, as Ascent was bleeding money.

The current owner is married to an heiress of the Wal Mart fortune that is correct. However they did not buy the Avs until 2000-01 season.
