to that money due to the very nature of contracts, but I can't agree that he'll have earned it. He's pretty much shot in terms of playing hockey... I can't envision ever feeling like he's earned the money he's due next year based solely on his hard work with Buffalo and his 3 outta 5 acceptable seasons with NYR.
He put in enough hard work and effort to be offered the contract he was offered. Was it an unrealistic contract? Absolutely. But you, me, and everyone else on this board would have taken it.
Fulfilling his end of the terms of his contract is all he needs to do to "earn" it at this point. If he does everything his contract says he has to, then he's earned the money that compensates him for that.
