As an organization it was hard to let Jarome go. He was a great captain and will be missed by his management and teammates. However, given that he will be 34 in just over a month and a half and the direction that the team is headed, it was a move we had to make. Although we were looking to land more for the star winger, it was imperative that we attained the highest draft pick we could get. Given that teams generally in the top 10 are looking to rebuild as well, Boston was the only logical trading partner. We feel that we will get one hell of a player at 9 if we choose to stay at that position.
In addition, we pick up a very underrated defenceman im Kempfer and a late round draft pick that should come in handy. This was essentially for the negotiating rights of Curtis Glencross. He is already 28 and now was the time to move him in order to rebuild for the future. We also freed up a lot of cap space in the process and feel that we can replace his contribution via free agency.
This deal may not have been a steal for the Calgary Flames but in the grand scheme of things we feel we are headed in the right direction.
I think no team would give up there franchise player even if he was in the latter of his career *when he's still producing. This is a guy that is more valuable than in a draft where a 9th overall pick could easily be a bust.
