Long pants/Cooperalls:

Pat Quinn was initially a huge proponent of the long pants. Opposing players (Mike Liut was one) complained that the puck got lost in the leg of the pants and that led to a disadvantage. Eventually, the NHL Board outlawed them based on a mandate that all uniforms be uniformed. There was also a comfort factor, or lack thereof despite the opinion that the pants would reduce injuries. However, there was a preseason game when Ilkka Sinisalo (rookie season, IIRC) slid into a goalpost in Montreal and it was stated that the pants prevented a severe injury. Slim chance they'll be making a comeback.
