Wow, not bad drafting Marty McFly!
As you can see further above - Marty chose about the same amount of Canadians, but less Americans and Czechs, more Swedes and Finns, the same amount of Slovakians and a few players from more oddball countries than Sather & his draft team went for. The results kind of speak for themselves and maybe should be a cursor for future drafting - no? Lot´s & lot´s of busts and lousy asset management there Glenn - if you were hired by Donald Trump (or me) - you would´ve be shown the door long before...Doc & Marty appeared.
Even if the last years picks show a bit more promise - the 21st century has not been anything other than can be labeled as mediocre. 93 pics over 11 years resulting in 1 elite player (Hank), one more All Star (Staal) and 5 more roster players that are good (Dubinsky, Callahan, Anisimov, Stepan & Sauer) enough to play on the team. All of our other draft picks that resulted in NHLers have basically been traded away for something we no longer use - meaning FAIL!
The Doc and Marty are as stated now hiring you to be our new GM and put together a new squad in his "McFly Universe". That might not be the easisest thing to do if one were to chose a team based on the "real" NYR draft picks made in the 21st Century. But since Team DeLorean has drafted so well and you get to use all their picks at will, I belive the chances are quite good to put up a succesful team.
And since we expect to get numerous significant “hometown discounts” on our troop, he has decided that our 5 successful homegrown picks in Brandon Dubinsky, Ryan Callahan, Artem Anisimov, Derek Stepan and Marc Staal all together come at a great discount of $0 as a cap hit!!! They negate the value of many contracts that in reality would be lower priced now. So they are in reality a free bonus, nice to have on the team at this discounted rate. These 5 players constitute THE “SATHER PROCLAIMED CORE” of the NYR team and THEY MUST BE ON THE McFLY UNIVERSE ROSTER and they therefore cannot be omitted. They are The Golden Geese of our, ahem, so-so drafting (so far) for the past 11 years.
But on the other hand, The King costs you all of $10.000.000. I have no idea what The Crazy Doc and Slather cooked up one dark & windy April evening, but this is his cap hit until 2015. And he also MUST be on the team (Bloomingdales is apparently doing some serious AD campaign the next 3 years with Hank as The PosterBoy). So in the end - you get $50.000.000 to spend on filling out the team´s roster with 17 more players (plus the eventual bonus overage you accumulate - which you can use).
But then again, Marty has made one or two pretty good picks these past 11 drafts, along with the crazy Doc of course, so you can try to put together a new “BACK TO THE FUTURE” NYR squad that you think would be competitive this year and beyond. Remember – these are all draft picks we in reality “could” have chosen. Then again – if we had been drafting this well, I find it hard to believe we would not have been drafting lower the past few years. But that is besides the point. Marty said something about traveling simountaneously through parallel dimensions and winding up with this scenario without past results (and Stanley Cups) influencing where we are today. Kind of freaks me out - but... I am sure most GMs would bid quite generously to take a ride with the DeLorean through the past 11 drafts. ALSO - You may or may not agree with the pics Marty has made - but this is The “Marty McFly Universe” and his rules and choices apply without exception!

Sooooooo - Good Luck at putting together a team compatible today and in the future. It is a long time until October (and we do tend to get bored getting downright ugly on some topics in the offseason) and this is btw no Fantasy League or anything – it is just some out of this universe stuff… Fun, not to be taken seriously or lightly … Just somewhere in between… getting us though the duldroms when NYR hockey is not to be viewed and future roster speculation is at its greatest.
In one week, a flash of light will appear on your doorstep and you too will be able to be painlessly zoomed off to a happier NYR dimension.
OK – Once again - Good luck Boys & Girls and safe travels!!!
