the tradition in vancouver actually started because it was a sign of surrender...

during the 1982 playoffs in a game against chicago, then vancouver head coach roger neilson was so frustrated and fed up with the terrible officiating that he grabbed a stick and put a towel on the end and held it up in mock surrender. several players then did the same and neilson got thrown out...

the next game when they got home fans had white towels and were waving them above their heads...
