Let's see... You've got 23 players on the NHL roster... and maybe 7-8 legit to marginal prospects playing at Hartford... the likes of Grachev, Hagelin, Bourque, Kundratek, J.Wilson, Talbot.
Most of the remaining 15-20 contracts will go to minor league fodder... that is, guys who don't have a prayer of making an impact in the NHL. This includes the Chris Chappells, the Justin Soryals, the Lee Baldwins, the Tysen Dowzaks and the Matt McCues of the world.
You also sign a few of these types of players in the hopes that you stumble on an overlooked diamond in the rough, like a Dan Girardi. But the vast majority of them have very little to offer even at the lowest of the minor leagues. If you strictly sign these kind of longshots, then your minor league team will be in shambles.
Instead you sign 4-5 veterans, who are not quite prospects anymore, but who've shown that they can be somewhat productive at the minor league level. The likes of Kris Newbury and Chad Kolarik fall into this category. This helps a team like The Whale be competitive while its prospects develop. It also gives you some options in case of injuries.
My questions are what what "really useful" contract is Kolarik taking away, and what other player who is available would be better suited for this role?
