Assuming 1 Captain and 4 Alternates (Two Road, Two Home):
One forward alternate and one defenseman alternate for each pairing. Steen and Jackman return with their As, Brewer's out so Backes goes from A to C, and with Johnson being traded that leaves two A's open. Last season, during Steen and Jackman's injuries, McDonald and Pietrangelo were given the other A's (three A's in game with Backes being the third), so that would be the set-up.
Backes gets the C for being a pretty vocal teammate, having very good skills with public and media, the popularity from last season (30-30-60 with over 200 hits and being voted MVP by fans), and for already being locked-up in a 5-year contract with the team. He sticks up for his teammates, plays a passionate game, and has very apparent (and audible) leadership on the ice. Dude wins by a landslide.
Assuming 1 Captain and 2 Alternates:
This would mean there is no need for the two other A's, so nothing changes.
