can't harp too much on the 1999 draft, cause i believe that we only had a 2nd rounder...
personally, i'd have loved the habs to pick some amazing players in that span, but those were considered weak draft years... the players we picked were almost exactly in line with their CSB final rankings, but we picked lots of guys who didn't follow up on their promise (Carkner, Hanchuk, etc.). Who is to blame?? Our scouting, the csb, Houle, the coaching...?
Also, you have to remember that the guys who have developed quickly from the 1999 and 1998 drafts and are current stars are rare talents that jumped into a definite system and found a niche (Hossa in Ottawa, Comrie in Edmonton, Reghr in Calgary)... with all the coaches and systems we had from 1998-present it's hard to imagine prospects turning out well. lack of consistency in the organisation only made things worse... jason ward played well when he was up in his first year, but craig darby was on the first line due to all those injuries... there's no way he could develop slowly into a scoring threat as they hoped (a la Joe Thornton) because he was one of the more talented guys on the roster, and since he's in montreal the expectations and pressure for 1st rounders are crazy.
We didn't do great, and it's hurting us now... but in the future things look brighter.
