For example, on July 1 at noon could the Rangers email Richards' agent an email with 3 SPCs attached and tell him to sign whichever he prefers? Give him an option between something like:

$40.5MM/6 years (AAV = $6.75MM, lower cap hit, room for another contract at the end.)
$55MM/10 years (AAV = $5.5MM, still lower cap hit, set for life.)
Absolutely. Teams do it with RFAs all the time, offering less money for shorter term, or more money for longer term. Teams can offer free agents any number of proposals that they want. They can only sign one of them.
