Richards would do it because the contract would be over before he is 35, eluding the 35+ contract penalties. He would be able to get another big paycheck after.
Richards won't do it. From all the quotes, he wants this to be his last contract. I have no problem with giving him 8 or 9 years as long as the cap hit is low. The last 2 or 3 years won't even matter because he probably will retire by then.
9 years / 54 mil = 6 mil per year
9, 9, 8, 8, 7, 6, 4, 2, 1
That's 47 mil in the first 6 years, an average of almost 8 mil. He plays until he's 38, collects 51 mil over 7 years, and then retires.
