recent medical studies show that it is not so much the surgery but the accompanying rehabilitation process that is most responsible for improvements. I don't know anyone (especially younger people) who has had knee surgery who doesn't claim to be unable to participate in moderate athletic activity. I'm NO EXPERT, but i think that the whole knee surgery thing is not as beneficial as it is reputed to be.
