there's no LTIR in the summer and a player cant be placed on it till the season starts, but you can exceed the cap by up to 10% but IF (and this is a big if) we were to get to that level of expenditure we run the risk of missing out on good players later in the year after arbitration etc, case in point.. when jp dumont was let go by buffalo, we had no cap space with which to sign him and everyone widely and soundly bashed management for "lacking foresight" and not "saving capspace" and whatever else they whined about.. now everyone wants to, essentially, waste the capspace on a player who may or may not play.. yes it looks highly highly unlikely lombardi is sadly done but just as is the case with the bruins and savard, until lombardi or savvy call it a career they cant be demoted or bought out or whatever and that money is used on the cap till theyre put on LTIR. In nashville's case, its 3.5 mil wasted. The leafs arent a cup contender at the moment (on paper at least) and, as such, can afford to take that risk, the habs are closer to the promised land so to speak then the leafs so the risk isnt necessarily worth the reward to the team..
Also from what the preds fans have stated, cody franson is, at most, marginally faster then komisarek was (to the point its deemed a wash) so yes he has offensive instincts but he's basically a 6'5" gill who can pass...
