Being a lifetime Canuck fan its a bit simple. Offensive Defensemens are actually your defensemens that can play a 2 way game, whereas Stay-at-Home-D or S-D-D are only reliable 1 way.

The way it's worked since forever with the Canucks, was 2 way Defensemens are your first 2 pairings (provided your team has the depth for it) and your Stay at homers are usually your plug pairings. I imagine this is how it would work for any team that can afford such defense.
