Even more absurd would be to not keep him, and the go out and have to pay a ufa premium to replace him with an equal/lesser player.
If the Habs medical team conclusively agree that he'll reach a full recovery, we should b locking him up for 4-5 years if possible at anything around 3M (ideally a tad less, but I'd even go as high as ~3.3 to get it done). Odds of replacing him/what he gives us, for less than that over that span are slim-to-none imo, but knowing you have a heart&guts defensive top-4 player with strong leadership and a great work ethic (not too mention a track record of steady improvement likely to continue) is well worth 3M$ a season, and unlike Cole's deal, is more likely to b more valuable as the years go by.
