Richards has his championship/Conn Smythe from 2004, but hasnt dont much since then to validate a "winner" label. In fact, he hasnt participated in the playoffs 4 of the last 5 seasons.
Also, not denying that Richards makes his teammates better, but does your argument insinuate that Henrik Sedin does not? He has about 70 more assists than Richards over the past 3 seasons, but I guess his teammates could've potted all those goals with any center.
I'd be curious to see if you analysis here would be the same if Richards wasnt a Ranger and you were forced to look at this objectively.
I tend to think of Sedin as a special case in any offensive consideration, because he comes pre-packaged with an elite winger that he has about as good chemistry with as you could possibly have.
Take H. Sedin away from his brother (and whoever else you want to throw out there with them) and stick him on the Dallas roster that Richards has played with, and I think you'd see a big difference.
EDIT: However, that's not to say that Sedin still wouldn't be a great player.
