Richards has his championship/Conn Smythe from 2004, but hasnt dont much since then to validate a "winner" label. In fact, he hasnt participated in the playoffs 4 of the last 5 seasons.
Also, not denying that Richards makes his teammates better, but does your argument insinuate that Henrik Sedin does not? He has about 70 more assists than Richards over the past 3 seasons, but I guess his teammates could've potted all those goals with any center.
I'd be curious to see if you analysis here would be the same if Richards wasnt a Ranger and you were forced to look at this objectively.
I've been a BIG fan of Richards since his rookie season. Long before I joined HFboards. When I was on the old Rangers "official" board years ago, I wanted Richards badly the year he was traded to Dallas.
I've felt he was one of the best centers and underrated players in the league since his rookie season. For what ever reason he's always been underrated.
I don't like the Sedins all that much. Just really never been a fan of theirs. I don't feel they have the extra (going to make a youtube joke now) "fua" that some players have. The whole "I can't play without my brother" thing irks me. Its just personal preference. To me Kesler on that Vancouver team is more of the heart/soul driven to win guy. Sedin is extremely skilled but that's not enough, IMO.
There are MANY players I love that are not a Ranger and wont ever be.
There's a good post by shadowrunner above that shows just how underrated Richards is and the difference in production between Richards on a weaker team, and Sedin on a strong team, is really marginal.
By the way, for a laugh, "fua":
