According to this article (I cannot vouch for it's source) any incentives that do not exceed $3.2 million can be counted against the following years cap.


Depending on what money Kovalchuk signs for if he signs or chooses to play out the season in Russia the Thrashers could exceed the league's $39 million cap this season if Bondra hits many of his incentives. A team must have cap room in a given year for any incentives worth more than $3.2 million.

However, incentives up to that threshold are allowed to be counted against the following season if they exceed the cap. It was a gamble Waddell was willing to take
