I don't know if this had been reported yet, but Elliotte Friedman reported in his "30 thoughts" CBC column yesterday the following bit about the Cole signing:

Sounds like Erik Cole was set to go back to Carolina for three years, even at slightly less money than Montreal was offering. Then, Pierre Gauthier added a fourth season and the Hurricanes backed off. That was the difference.

When the Habs signed Cole, I thought it was a little pricey and for one too many years, but nothing as ridiculous as some of the other signings on July 1. Given that they tried to sign Cole for 3 years but couldn't, I now think it is perfectly reasonable that they gave him a 4-year deal. He does fit in perfectly with what the Canadiens need up front.
