Rough coparables to Subban (ie. young high profile defencemen signing their second contract) include:

Mark Staal (NYR), 5 years at 3.975 million (2010-2015). Actual salary 3.100-3.675-3.775-3.875-5.450.
Lower point production than Subban, higher in Ranger's debt chart playing almost as #1 defender while Subban is (at least for time being) clearly behind Markov.

Kristopher Letang (PIT), 4 years at 3.5 million (2010-2014). Flat salary.
Signed after season of scoring at 57 point pace as fourth in Pittsburgh's dept chart (most likely 2nd in offensive zone).

Keith Yandle (PHO), 5 years at 5.250 million (2011-2016). Actual salary 4.750-5.000-5.250-5.500-5.750.
Coming off from 60 point season playing as Coyotes #1.

Dion Phaneuf (CGY->TOR), 6 years at 6.5 million (2008-2014). Actual salary 7.000-6.500-7.000-6.500-6.500-5.500.
Coming off from 60 points season with Norris nomination.

Shea Weber (NAS), 3 years at 4.5 million (2008-2011). Flat salary.
Coming off from 40 point and on-pace at 30 points seasons.

Drew Doughty (LA), currently unsigned.
One year removed from Norris nomination with 59 point seasons, followed by 40 points season.

Subban will not be relied as teams #1 defenceman at this point and as q consequence he will most likely not be paid as such. If he can establish himself as at least 40-50 point player at this point, 3-4 years at 4 million per would be reasonable (3 keeping him as RFA, 4 taking him straight to UFA).

Longer term would most likely require significantly higher cap hit (some rumours suggesting that Doughty has declined 9 years at 6.9 per contract).
