Ukraine launches new league - Professional Hockey League opens with nine teams

The league size goes up from seven to nine and could see an increase to up to 12 teams in the future. The teams entered for the 2011-2012 season are: Donbass Donetsk, Sokil Kyiv, Kompanion Kyiv, Bily Bars Brovary, Vorony Sumy, Berkut Kyiv, Kharkivski Akuly, Tsunami Ivano-Frankivsk, LAZ Lviv.
The new league will kick off on 16th September. The league’s General Director Yuri Zagorodni explained at a press conference that there will be no salary cap, but a minimum budget of $300,000. The assembly approved other requirements such as arena standards, and clubs are obliged to run junior teams or to be affiliated with hockey schools. Each team is allowed to sign up to seven import players.
