Buffalo has a great chance at emmerging as a contender this year imo...
chemistry and injurie issues are a concern, but they've added considerable depth/talent to a team that was already a solid 6-10 team in the conference.
Regehr and Erhoff added to the back end will be a big boost, and as much as people are quick to question the Leino deal, I think he will fit in nicely to their fwd group which, while smallish, has a nice balance through it's top 9 and has a very solid 4th line.
add Miller and Ruff, and I think you have the recipe for a very good season, not far from the buffalo team that dominated the East (only to lose in the conference finals) a few years back (and let's not forget that they dominated the East that year with Briere/Drury/Campbell as their "big-name" stars... is that really a better trio than Roy/Leino/Erhoff?
i'm very worried about the Sabres direction, as a habs fan. Their management team has done an excellent job putting together a lineup more or less as good as the habs the past few years (6-10 conference range), but did so on a shoestring budget (compared to our maxed out bloated salary cap situation)... remains to be seen if their moves with a full cap budget will be as good as their moves on a tight budget, and while they did overpay a bit this offseason, I suspect that from a planning pov, Reigeir (Sp?) is banking on the recent additions lifting the teams competitiveness in teh short term, and allowing them to have an easier/cheaper time attracting suitable talent down the road.
as much as they did hand out big term and big overall $$'s this offseason, in doing so they managed to keep their actuall player salaries @ a reasonable level (not paying anyone the big 6-7M$ deals), which will likely help in convincing future UFA's to come in at $ figures that allows them to continue to be a contender (not unlike the Red Wings cap structure and ufa approach).
I see both the Sabres and Bruins finishing ahead of the habs unless we can put together a very "lucky" season (minimal injuries, strong play accross the board from young players like Eller, MaxPac, DD, Subban, Emelin/Weber, White...) much like we did in 2008.
