You bring a good point. Makes sense. However, I'm one of many who thinks this D is less than stellar. They might overachieve as a group, but if they don't, the Habs are in trouble (IMO).
But you're right, Gainey probably feels the way you do. At least, he's probably ready to see what the team does with this D, regardless of who earns the last spot, and react accordingly if it proves inadequate.
As for who I think the Habs should get if they plan on going after a top-4, Hamhuis isn't on that list. He'll cost way too much, for the simple fact he's still very young (and cheap). That's a valued asset in this league. The Habs might be better off going after a vet like Witt.
